Xuanhuaceratops is a type of dinosaur that lived during the Late Jurassic period, around 150.8 to 145.5 million years ago. It was discovered in northeastern China, specifically in the Houcheng Formation in Hebei Province.
**Discovery of Xuanhuaceratops**
The first fossil of Xuanhuaceratops was found in the 1970s by a researcher named Nie Rongzhen, near a place called Yanjiagou. This initial discovery was just a small part of the dinosaur’s skeleton.
In 1985, the name Xuanhuasaurus niei was used in a study, but without enough details, making it an invalid name. Later, in 2003, more fossil fragments were found, although they were not as complete.
In 2006, a team of scientists officially named the dinosaur Xuanhuaceratops niei. The name means “Xuanhua horned face.” The name honors Nie for finding the first skeleton. The type specimen (the first example of the species) is made up of a partial skeleton, which includes parts of the skull and some bones.
