Shuvuuia is a small, bird-like dinosaur that lived in the late Cretaceous period, around 75 million years ago. It was discovered in Mongolia and is known from a family of dinosaurs called Alvarezsauridae.
The name Shuvuuia comes from a Mongolian word meaning “bird,” which is fitting because this dinosaur had some bird-like features.
**Description**
Shuvuuia was quite small, measuring about 1 meter long, which is roughly 3.3 feet, and it weighed around 3.5 kilograms, or 7.7 pounds. This makes it one of the smallest non-avian dinosaurs we know of.
Its skull was designed in a unique way, with long, slender jaws that allowed it to move its upper jaw separately from its head. This type of movement is called prokinesis.
Shuvuuia had long and slender back legs that probably made it an agile runner. Its front limbs were short but very strong, and it had a special thumb that was much larger than its other fingers. This strong thumb and its smaller fingers likely helped it dig into the ground.
Fossils of Shuvuuia have been found in two places in Mongolia, in areas known as Ukhaa Tolgod and Tögrögiin Shiree. These locations date back to about 75 million years ago, during a time when other dinosaurs, like Velociraptor and Protoceratops, roamed the same area.
**Diet and Behavior**
Shuvuuia is believed to have been nocturnal, which means it was active at night. It likely used its strong legs to chase down small animals and its powerful arms to dig out insects and other small creatures from their hiding places. Its ears suggested that it had excellent hearing, similar to that of an owl, allowing it to hunt in the dark.
**Feathers**
Interestingly, some Shuvuuia fossils showed remnants of small structures that looked like feathers. Research has indicated that Shuvuuia probably had a coat of feathers, which would be similar to modern birds. These feathers were made of a protein found only in birds, which adds to the evidence that Shuvuuia shared some traits with our feathered friends today.
