Asiatyrannus

Asiatyrannus is an extinct type of dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, about 66.7 million years ago. It is a member of the tyrannosaur family and is mostly found in the southern regions of Asia, particularly in the Nanxiong Formation of China.

The name “Asiatyrannus” means “Asian tyrant.” There is one species known, called Asiatyrannus xui. This species was identified from a fossil that includes a skull and parts of its body.

**Discovery**

The first remains of Asiatyrannus were found in September 2017 in Jiangxi Province, China. The fossil includes most of its skull and parts of its legs and tail. Researchers described Asiatyrannus xui as a new kind of dinosaur in 2024. The name honors a well-known dinosaur researcher named Xu Xing.

**Physical Features**

Asiatyrannus is considered small to medium-sized for a tyrannosaur. Its skull is about 47.5 centimeters long. The estimated length of Asiatyrannus is around 3.5 to 4 meters, which is smaller compared to some other dinosaurs in its family.

The highly distinctive features of Asiatyrannus include a deep-snouted skull resembling a smaller version of its relatives. Though Asiatyrannus was not fully grown when discovered, it still showed significant growth, suggesting it could have grown larger as it matured.

**Classification**

Asiatyrannus is a member of the Tyrannosauridae family, which includes many well-known dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus and Tarbosaurus. In studies, Asiatyrannus has been placed close to another dinosaur called Nanuqsaurus, which is from North America.

More recent studies suggested that Asiatyrannus may actually represent a juvenile form of a larger dinosaur, possibly related to Tarbosaurus, due to similarities in their skull features.

**Habitat and Ecology**

Asiatyrannus lived in the same ecosystem as many other dinosaurs, such as Qianzhousaurus, and several other theropods. The place where Asiatyrannus was found had a variety of dinosaurs and other ancient animals like crocodiles and turtles, showing a rich diversity of life during its time.

In summary, Asiatyrannus is a fascinating dinosaur that gives us a glimpse into the world of the Late Cretaceous in Asia. Its remains help scientists understand the evolution and variety of tyrannosaurs.
