Amargatitanis is a type of dinosaur that lived a long time ago, around 129 to 123 million years ago, during the Early Cretaceous period.
This dinosaur is special because it belongs to a family called Dicraeosauridae, which is known for short-necked, smaller long-necked dinosaurs. Amargatitanis was discovered in Argentina, specifically in the La Amarga Formation, a place known for its interesting fossils.
The name “Amargatitanis” means “Amarga giant.” It was named in 2007 by a scientist named Sebastián Apesteguía. The species name, Amargatitanis macni, honors the Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales where the fossil remains are kept.
Amargatitanis is believed to have been about 12 meters long, which is a little more than 39 feet, and weighed around 3.5 metric tons, similar to the weight of a small car. It had strong legs, a long tail, and a body that would have looked similar to other known dicraeosaurids like Dicraeosaurus and Amargasaurus.
When the fossils were first discovered in 1983, it was thought that this dinosaur might belong to the Titanosaur group, which are larger sauropods. However, further studies showed that it is actually a dicraeosaurid.
