The name “Zizhongosaurus” means “Zizhong lizard.” It was named in 1983 by a scientist named Dong Zhiming. The name comes from Zizhong County in Sichuan Province, where the fossils were discovered, and the specific name “chuanchengensis” refers to a nearby town called Chuancheng.
The fossils of Zizhongosaurus include parts of its spine, arm, and pelvis, which were likely from one individual dinosaur. These fossils were found in the Ziliujing Formation.
Zizhongosaurus was thought to be a small size compared to other dinosaurs. Over the years, some scientists have put it in different dinosaur families, but there is still some confusion about its exact classification. Some suggest it could be related to a group called Vulcanodontidae.
In 1999, a second species called Zizhongosaurus huangshibanensis was mentioned, but it has not been fully described yet.
