Traukutitan is a type of dinosaur that is part of a group called titanosaurs. These dinosaurs lived a long time ago during the late Cretaceous period, around 85 million years ago.
Fossils of Traukutitan were found in a place called Patagonia in Argentina. The first fossils were studied in 1993, but the dinosaur was officially named in 2011 by two scientists, Rubén Darío Juárez Valieri and Jorge Orlando Calvo. The name “Traukutitan” comes from an Araucanian mountain spirit and the word “titan,” which refers to giant beings in Greek mythology. The specific name “eocaudata” means “dawn tail,” hinting at the shape of its tail bones.
Traukutitan is considered a large dinosaur with some unique features. One special characteristic is the shape of its tail vertebrae, which are flat rather than rounded. This dinosaur is thought to belong to a family called Titanosauridae and may fit into a subgroup known as Lognkosauria.
